Texas Thunder 150
Mar 31, 2007 The Allstate Texas Thunder 150 lived up to its name as rain was the story of the weekend. Thunderstorms began Friday during registration and continued throughout much of the day’s activities. A break finally came late in the afternoon and allowed teams some much-needed practice time in preparation for Saturday night’s race. Saturday dawned clear and sunny and brought the opportunity for the Lofton Racing Team to work together and develop the communication needed for a successful race. Practice under green-flag conditions had teams making many changes for qualification. When Justin Lofton finally hit the track for his qualifying effort, a quick-lap time of 15.019 ensured him a top-five starting spot. The driver autograph session prior to the event was very popular with the fans and included former NASCAR Nextel Cup champion Terry Labonte, who also served as Grand Marshall. The race began with the #66 Lofton Cattle Ford Fusion lined up fifth on the grid in the 28-car field. In spite of numerous yellow flags, Justin Lofton raced his way to second place before contact from behind on lap 72 sent him spinning into the infield, where his car remained for two laps before refiring. More cautions never allowed Justin to regain many positions. “We had a great weekend considering we were working with a new car that had not been tested,” said the 21-year old driver from Westmorland, CA. “Many of the crew members had not met each other before the race so we had adjustments to make in working together, but the car was fast off the trailer, and I had my best qualifying effort to date. The car ran well during the race though the finish does not reflect that. I feel we have great momentum going into the next race. Rob and the whole crew did an excellent job putting together a fast race car that looked great on the track,” concluded Justin. Crew Chief Rob Dixon added, “Overall the weekend went well, despite our finishing results. We had some things happen that were out of our control, but now it’s on to Phoenix.” The next event will be the Phoenix 150 on Thursday, April 19, at Phoenix International Raceway. The event will air live on HDNet at 11:00 p.m. EST. The Allstate Texas Thunder 150 will re- air at 11:30 a.m. PST on Thursday, April 12 on SPEED’s “Racing Across America.” |
